From learner to licence: the steps
- Pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT). Rules of the road, signs and markings. Book it at one of the three driving centres.
- Get your Provisional Driving Licence (PDL). Needed before you can drive on the road with an instructor.
- Take driving lessons. Through a driving centre’s school or a private instructor.
- Pass the Final Theory Test (FTT). Safe driving, hazards and expressways. Required before the practical test.
- Pass the practical driving test. Circuit and road test. Then you drive on probation with P plates.
The full walkthrough, with what to expect at each stage, is in How to Get a Driving Licence in Singapore.
Common questions
What is the difference between the BTT and the FTT?
The Basic Theory Test (BTT) covers traffic rules, signs and road markings, and you need to pass it before you can apply for a Provisional Driving Licence. The Final Theory Test (FTT) goes further into safe driving, hazards and expressway driving, and you must pass it before you can book the practical driving test.
What is the Riding Theory Test (RTT)?
The RTT is the theory test for a motorcycle licence. You take it after passing the BTT and before the practical riding test, and a pass is valid for one year. It covers riding technique, protective gear, carrying a pillion and how riders share the road with other traffic.
How many questions are in the BTT, FTT and RTT, and what is the pass mark?
The BTT and FTT each have 50 multiple-choice questions to answer in 50 minutes, according to the Traffic Police. The pass mark is commonly cited as 45 correct (90%), but it is not stated on an official page, so confirm it with your driving centre before your test date. The RTT handbook does not publish the test format, so ask your riding school how many questions it has and what score you need. Our RTT mock uses the same 50 questions and 90% mark as a guide.
Are these the official test questions?
No. These are original practice questions written by coeprice.com from the published traffic rules. They are not the official question bank and we are not affiliated with the Traffic Police or any driving centre.
