BTT chapter guide
BTT licence and test process explained
25 BTT practice questions in this chapter · unofficial practice, not the official question bank
Not every BTT question is about driving. This chapter covers the path to a licence itself: the minimum ages for car and motorcycle classes, the order of tests from the BTT to the practical test, how long a Provisional Driving Licence lasts, the eyesight standard, and the rules for learners holding a PDL.
It also covers what happens after you pass: the one-year probation, where to display P plates and what happens if you don't, how long a licence is valid, the classes for automatic cars and for motorcycles, converting a foreign licence, and the extra steps for older drivers. These are facts rather than judgement calls, so they are some of the easiest marks to secure.
Sample questions, explained
12 of the 25 questions in this chapter, with the reasoning behind each answer.
-
1. What is the minimum age for a Class 3 or Class 3A (car) driving licence?
- A16
- B17
- C18 (correct answer)
- D21
Why: You must be at least 18 for a Class 3 or 3A licence. Heavier classes such as Class 4 require you to be 21 and to already hold a qualifying licence.
-
2. Where should a probationary driver display the P plate on a car with front and rear windscreens?
- AOn the dashboard only
- BOn the rear bumper only
- CAnywhere on the left side of the car
- DAt the top right of both the front and rear windscreens, as seen from outside (correct answer)
Why: The plate must be shown at the front and rear, in the top-right corner of each windscreen when viewed from outside the car.
-
3. What happens to a probationary driver who is caught twice for failing to display the P plate during the probation year?
- ATheir licence is revoked (correct answer)
- BThey receive a verbal warning
- CTheir probation is extended by a month
- DNothing, because it is a minor matter
Why: Failing to show the plate brings a fine, and two or more such offences during probation lead to revocation of the licence.
-
4. Which statement about learner drivers holding a PDL is correct?
- AThey may practise alone in quiet estates
- BThey may drive with any licensed friend beside them
- CThey must display two 18 cm square L plates, front and rear, and drive only under a licensed instructor's supervision (correct answer)
- DThey need only one L plate, on the rear window
Why: Learners must show L plates at the front and back of the vehicle, be insured, and drive only with their licensed driving instructor. Supervision by family or friends is not allowed.
-
5. Which licence class covers motor cars without a clutch pedal (automatic cars) only?
- AClass 3
- BClass 2B
- CClass 4
- DClass 3A (correct answer)
Why: Class 3A is for cars without a clutch pedal. Class 3 covers cars with a clutch, Class 2B small motorcycles, and Class 4 heavy vehicles.
-
6. A foreigner with a valid foreign driving licence wants to convert it to a Singapore licence. Which theory test must they pass?
- AThe Basic Theory Test (correct answer)
- BBoth the BTT and FTT
- CThe Riding Theory Test
- DNo theory test is required
Why: Converting a foreign licence requires a pass in Singapore's Basic Theory Test along with a valid foreign licence. It is the one test every new Singapore driver must pass.
-
7. A Singapore citizen holding a Class 3 licence turns 65. What do they need to keep their licence valid?
- ANothing, because the licence is valid for life
- BRetake the Basic Theory Test
- CRetake the practical driving test every year
- DA medical certification of fitness to drive, repeated every 3 years (correct answer)
Why: From age 65, a Class 2 or 3 type licence stays valid only if a Singapore-registered doctor certifies the holder fit to drive, at 65, 68, 71 and so on. Heavy vehicle classes need yearly checks and a proficiency test.
-
8. You have passed the Basic Theory Test but don't have a valid Provisional Driving Licence yet. Can you start practical lessons on the road?
- AYes, as long as an instructor is with you
- BNo, taking practical lessons without a valid PDL is an offence (correct answer)
- CYes, but only in quiet residential estates
- DYes, for up to one month
Why: The PDL is what allows a learner to take practical driving or riding lessons. Having lessons without a valid one is an offence, even with an instructor.
-
9. A learner aged 66 wants to apply for a Provisional Driving Licence. What extra step is needed first?
- APassing the Final Theory Test first
- BGetting a letter from their employer
- CBeing certified fit to drive by a Singapore-registered doctor (correct answer)
- DNothing extra; the process is the same at every age
Why: Learners aged 65 and above must be certified fit to drive by a Singapore-registered medical practitioner. The PDL can be applied for once the medical report is accepted.
-
10. What is the minimum age to obtain a Class 2B motorcycle licence?
- A16
- B17
- C21
- D18 (correct answer)
Why: You must be at least 18 for a Class 2B licence, the same age as for a Class 3 or 3A car licence.
-
11. For how long is a Singapore driving licence valid for a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident?
- A5 years, then it must be renewed
- BFor their lifetime (with medical checks needed from age 65) (correct answer)
- C10 years
- DUntil age 70
Why: Citizens and PRs hold a lifetime licence, although from 65 they must be certified fit to drive to keep it valid. Foreigners on work passes get a licence valid for up to 5 years.
-
12. Is it a legal requirement to carry your driving licence (physical or digital) every time you drive in Singapore?
- AYes, and you are fined if you don't
- BYes, but only for probationary drivers
- COnly the physical photocard counts
- DNo, but showing it if police stop you speeds up the check (correct answer)
Why: The law does not require you to carry your licence while driving in Singapore. Having the photocard or the Digital Driving Licence in the Singpass app helps police verify you faster.
