BTT chapter guide
BTT rules of the road explained
40 BTT practice questions in this chapter · unofficial practice, not the official question bank
The BTT's rules-of-the-road questions are the ones you use from your first lesson: the default speed limit and the special limits near schools and in Silver Zones, who gives way at junctions without lights and at roundabouts, when overtaking is allowed, and what an amber light asks of you. Our BTT set adds the parking distances learners are expected to know, from junctions, fire hydrants and bus stops, along with headlight hours and what to do when a police officer or a school patrol warden directs you.
Many of these questions turn on a single number or a single exception, so read every option before you answer. If you will take the FTT later, its chapter on the same topic moves on to roundabout signalling, overtaking judgement and what to do after a collision.
Sample questions, explained
12 of the 40 questions in this chapter, with the reasoning behind each answer.
-
1. Between which hours must you drive with your headlights switched on?
- A6pm to 6am
- B8pm to 6am
- COnly when it is raining
- D7pm to 7am (correct answer)
Why: Headlights are required at night, defined as 7pm to 7am. You should also switch them on in daytime whenever it rains or visibility is poor.
-
2. How close to a road junction or intersection may you park?
- ANo closer than 3 metres
- BNo closer than 4 metres
- CNo closer than 6 metres (correct answer)
- DNo closer than 15 metres
Why: Parking within 6 metres of a junction blocks the view of drivers turning in and out. Keep at least that distance away.
-
3. How much clearance must you leave on either side of a fire hydrant when parking?
- A1 metre
- B6 metres
- C9 metres
- D3 metres (correct answer)
Why: Keep at least 3 metres clear on each side of a fire hydrant so firefighters can reach it quickly.
-
4. A police officer directing traffic at a junction signals you to stop, but your traffic light is green. What should you do?
- AStop, because the officer's signal overrides the light (correct answer)
- BGo, because the green light takes priority
- CGo if no traffic is coming the other way
- DSound your horn to get the officer's attention
Why: A police officer's directions take precedence over traffic lights, signs, road markings and the normal rules. Disobeying them is an offence that carries demerit points.
-
5. You are waiting to turn right at a junction on a two-way street. Where should your car be positioned while you wait?
- AJust left of the middle of the road (correct answer)
- BHard against the left kerb
- CStraddling the centre line
- DIn the oncoming lane, ready to turn
Why: Waiting just left of the centre keeps you out of the way of traffic behind and clear of oncoming vehicles. Stay there until there is a safe gap before completing the turn.
-
6. On a road with three lanes in your direction, when may you keep to the centre lane?
- AOnly when you intend to turn right
- BNever, because you must always use the left lane
- CWhen the left lane is occupied by slower-moving vehicles (correct answer)
- DOnly at night
Why: The centre lane is for drivers going faster than the slower traffic in the left lane. The right-hand lane should be kept clear for overtaking and emergency vehicles.
-
7. How far from a bus stop must you keep when parking or letting your vehicle wait?
- AAt least 3 metres
- BAt least 6 metres
- CAt least 15 metres
- DAt least 9 metres (correct answer)
Why: Parking within 9 metres of a bus stop gets in the way of buses pulling in and out. The distance is measured from the edge of the yellow box or the tip of the bus bay.
-
8. Under the traffic rules, what counts as 'parking'?
- AStopping only with the engine switched off
- BKeeping the vehicle stationary for more than 30 minutes
- CBringing the vehicle to a stop and leaving it waiting, other than to immediately pick up or drop off passengers (correct answer)
- DAny stop made with the driver out of the vehicle
Why: A brief stop to let passengers in or out immediately is not parking. Once the vehicle is left waiting for any other reason, it is parked and the parking rules apply.
-
9. You see a free space along the kerb on the far side of a two-way road. Why must you not drive across and park in it?
- AYour car would be parked facing oncoming traffic (correct answer)
- BCars may only park on the left on weekdays
- CParking on the far side requires a coupon
- DYou would have to make a U-turn first
Why: Parking facing oncoming traffic is not allowed. A parked car should face the same direction as the traffic flowing on its side of the road.
-
10. At night, when should you use dipped headlights?
- AOnly on expressways
- BOnly when parked
- CNever; always use high beam at night
- DIn built-up areas and in rainy weather (correct answer)
Why: Dipped headlights are the right setting at night in built-up areas and whenever it rains. High beam in these conditions would dazzle drivers and other road users.
-
11. A school patrol warden holds up a 'STOP - Children' sign. What must you do?
- ASlow down and pass carefully
- BSound your horn to warn the children
- CContinue if no children are on the road yet
- DStop (correct answer)
Why: You must stop when signalled by a school patrol warden with this sign. Children may be about to cross and can be hard to see because of their height.
-
12. All the traffic lights at a junction show red at the same time. What does this 'all red' period mean for you?
- AYou may go if no one is coming
- BThe lights are faulty, so proceed with caution
- CDo not move off until your green light appears (correct answer)
- DOnly turning traffic must stop
Why: Some junctions show red on every approach at once, for safety or to let pedestrians cross. Wait for your own green light before moving off.
