BTT chapter guide

BTT expressways and tunnels explained

28 BTT practice questions in this chapter · unofficial practice, not the official question bank

Most of the BTT questions in this chapter are about the systems that run Singapore's expressways and road tunnels: the EMAS electronic signs (travel time displays, traffic information displays, the Must Exit and Exit Closed Ahead symbols, abbreviations such as SH), the lane-use signals over tunnel lanes, and the safety features of the MCE, KPE and CTE tunnels, such as SOS telephones, cross-passage doors and the radio broadcasts the control centre can break into.

The rest covers who may use an expressway, when you may stop on the shoulder, what to do first after a breakdown, and how to drive through work zones with temporary speed limits. Much of this is recognition: once you know what each display and symbol means, these are quick marks.

Sample questions, explained

12 of the 28 questions in this chapter, with the reasoning behind each answer.

  1. 1. Where would you see an EMAS Travel Time Display, and what does it show?

    • AInside tunnels, showing the speed limit for each lane
    • BAt car park entrances, showing how many lots are free
    • CAt traffic lights, showing how long until the light turns green
    • DAt entrances leading to expressways, showing estimated travel times to selected exits (correct answer)

Why: Travel Time Displays sit where you enter an expressway. They estimate how long it will take to reach selected exits, and can also carry incident messages.

  2. 2. On an EMAS Travel Time Display, the time to an exit is shown in green. What does that tell you?

    • AThe journey is taking no more than about 50% longer than normal (correct answer)
    • BThe exit is closed
    • CThere is an accident before that exit
    • DThe journey is taking more than twice the normal time

Why: The colours grade the delay: green is up to 50% longer than normal, yellow is a bigger delay, and red is the worst.

  3. 3. A large EMAS Traffic Information Display on the expressway shows a flashing red bar. What does it mean?

    • AThe speed limit has been raised
    • BTraffic ahead is flowing normally
    • CA road closure lies ahead (correct answer)
    • DAn emergency vehicle is behind you

Why: On a Traffic Information Display, a flashing red bar draws attention to a closure ahead, so you can plan to leave or take another route.

  4. 4. On an EMAS Traffic Information Display, what does a red cross show?

    • AThat the lane under the display is closed and you must leave it at once
    • BThat the expressway is free of congestion
    • CWhere an incident is, relative to the expressway exits or roads named on the display (correct answer)
    • DWhere the nearest petrol station is

Why: A red cross on these displays marks the location of a problem, referenced to the exits or road names shown, so you can react in good time.

  5. 5. An EMAS sign shows the 'Must Exit' symbol. What should you do?

    • ALeave the expressway, because it is closed ahead (correct answer)
    • BLeave only if your vehicle is a heavy vehicle
    • CKeep going but move to the right lane
    • DStop on the road shoulder and wait for it to reopen

Why: 'Must Exit' means the expressway is closed further on, so every vehicle has to leave it.

  6. 6. An EMAS sign warns 'Exit Closed Ahead'. What does it mean for you?

    • AThe whole expressway is shut and you must leave now
    • BYou should stop and wait for the exit to reopen
    • CThe exit is open only to emergency vehicles, so you may follow one through
    • DThe exit ahead is shut, so use another exit (correct answer)

Why: This symbol refers only to an exit. The expressway stays open, but you will need to leave by an alternative exit.

  7. 7. An EMAS sign shows a Lane Reduction symbol warning of an obstruction in one lane. What should you do?

    • ASpeed up to pass the obstruction before the lane is closed
    • BSlow down, drive carefully and be ready to change lane if needed (correct answer)
    • CStop in your lane until the obstruction is cleared
    • DMove onto the road shoulder to get past

Why: The sign gives you early warning that a lane is blocked further on, so you can slow down and move out of that lane safely if you are in it.

  8. 8. On EMAS signs, what does the abbreviation 'SH' stand for?

    • ASlow, hazard
    • BShoulder (correct answer)
    • CSpeed high
    • DSide heading

Why: EMAS signs use short forms such as LN (lane), BEF (before), AFT (after) and VEH (vehicle). 'SH' refers to the road shoulder.

  9. 9. An EMAS sign on the expressway shows an ambulance symbol. What should you do?

    • ASpeed up to stay ahead of the ambulance
    • BStop on the road shoulder at once
    • CNothing, because the sign is only for other ambulances
    • DLook out for the ambulance and give way to it (correct answer)

Why: The ambulance symbol warns that one is on the way. Watch for it in your mirrors and make room for it to pass.

  10. 10. Why is it a good habit to tune in to an FM radio channel before driving into a road tunnel?

    • ASo the tunnel control centre can break in with instructions during an emergency (correct answer)
    • BBecause the radio switches on the tunnel lights
    • CBecause radio silence is an offence in tunnels
    • DSo you can hear the toll charge for the tunnel

Why: The tunnel Operations Control Centre can break into radio broadcasts to tell motorists what to do in an emergency, which only helps if your radio is on.

  11. 11. Where are the emergency (SOS) telephones in expressway tunnels such as the MCE and KPE?

    • AOnly at the tunnel entrances
    • BNext to the fast lane, every 500 metres
    • CNext to the slow lane, roughly every 100 metres (correct answer)
    • DIn the middle of the tunnel only

Why: Emergency phones line the slow-lane side of the tunnel at about 100 m intervals and connect you to the tunnel Operations Control Centre.

  12. 12. In the MCE, KPE and CTE tunnels, where do the cross-passage doors next to the fast lanes lead?

    • AStraight up to the road surface above
    • BInto a tunnel car park
    • CInto the tunnel carrying traffic in the opposite direction (correct answer)
    • DInto a store room for repair equipment

Why: Cross-passage doors beside the fast lanes link to the opposite-bound tunnel, giving another escape route. Doors beside the slow lanes lead to escape staircases.
