FTT chapter guide

FTT expressway driving explained

23 FTT practice questions in this chapter · unofficial practice, not the official question bank

The FTT expressway questions are about driving on one: joining from the slip road at the speed of the traffic, which lane to keep to in normal traffic, why the right outermost lane is only for overtaking, preparing early for your exit and using the deceleration lane, and why a slow vehicle that stays in the centre lane is a danger. Speed limits on the expressways, including the KPE's, appear here as well.

It also tests what to do when things go wrong at speed: where you and your passengers wait after a breakdown, how lanes are numbered on electronic warnings, and how to respond to a flashing amber cross or a fire inside a tunnel. These are situations you hope never to meet, which is why they are worth rehearsing now.

Sample questions, explained

12 of the 23 questions in this chapter, with the reasoning behind each answer.

  1. 1. After pulling onto the shoulder with a breakdown, where should you and your passengers wait for help?

    • AInside the car with seat belts on
    • BStanding beside the car to flag down other drivers
    • COn the road shoulder in front of the car
    • DBehind the guardrail, well away from the carriageway (correct answer)

Why: Everyone should get clear of traffic and wait behind the impact guardrail until the recovery vehicle arrives. Never step out into the expressway lanes.

  2. 2. An electronic expressway sign warns of an obstruction in 'Lane 1'. Which lane is that?

    • AThe left-most (slow) lane
    • BThe right-most (fast) lane (correct answer)
    • CThe road shoulder
    • DThe deceleration lane at the next exit

Why: On EMAS signs, lanes are numbered upwards from the fast lane to the slow lane, and the shoulder is not counted. So Lane 1 is the right-most lane.

  3. 3. A flashing amber cross appears on the lane-use sign over your lane in a tunnel. What should you do?

    • AStop immediately
    • BIgnore it unless it turns red
    • CSlow down and be ready to change lanes, because there may be an obstruction ahead (correct answer)
    • DReverse to the tunnel entrance

Why: A flashing amber cross means the lane is still open but something may be blocking it further on. Reduce speed and prepare to move into another lane.

  4. 4. There is a fire in the tunnel ahead and traffic cannot move. What should you do?

    • AReverse your car out of the tunnel
    • BSwitch off the engine, leave the car and walk to the nearest emergency exit (correct answer)
    • CStay inside the car with the windows shut until help arrives
    • DMake a U-turn across the lanes

Why: If you cannot drive on, do not try to reverse. Turn off the engine, get out, and head to the nearest marked exit or escape staircase, listening to the radio for instructions.

  5. 5. What speed limits apply on most of Singapore's expressways?

    • A60 or 70 km/h
    • B100 or 110 km/h
    • C80 or 90 km/h (correct answer)
    • D50 km/h, the same as other roads

Why: Most expressways are signposted at 80 or 90 km/h. Always keep to the posted limit or your vehicle's own limit, whichever is lower.

  6. 6. Which speed limits apply on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE)?

    • A90 km/h throughout
    • B70 or 80 km/h (correct answer)
    • C50 km/h
    • D100 km/h

Why: The KPE, much of which runs underground, has a 70 or 80 km/h limit. Its tunnels also use variable speed signs, and a limit shown inside a red ring must be obeyed.

  7. 7. Which of these is NOT permitted to use an expressway?

    • AA motorcycle without a sidecar
    • BA taxi
    • CA light goods van
    • DA car being driven by a learner driver (correct answer)

Why: Learner drivers are on the list of prohibited expressway users, along with bicycles, e-bikes, trishaws, motorcycles with sidecars and slow construction vehicles. Pedestrians are also banned.

  8. 8. Vehicles whose own speed limit is 60 km/h or less must use which lane of an expressway?

    • AThe left-hand lane (correct answer)
    • BThe centre lane
    • CAny lane, as long as they keep to 60 km/h
    • DThe road shoulder

Why: Slower vehicles such as lorries limited to 60 km/h must stay in the left lane, so faster traffic can pass safely on the right.

  9. 9. When may you stop on the shoulder of an expressway?

    • ATo make or answer a phone call
    • BTo pick up or drop off a passenger
    • COnly in a breakdown, accident or emergency (correct answer)
    • DTo bypass a traffic jam

Why: The shoulder is for emergencies only. Driving along it, or stopping on it without a breakdown, accident or emergency, are offences that carry demerit points.

  10. 10. Your car breaks down on an expressway. Where should you place the warning triangle?

    • AOn the roof of your car
    • BAt least 20 metres behind the vehicle (correct answer)
    • CDirectly in front of the vehicle
    • DAbout 5 metres behind the vehicle

Why: Put the breakdown triangle at least 20 metres behind your vehicle so approaching drivers have time to react. Switch on your hazard lights too, even in daylight.

  11. 11. You realise you have just driven past your expressway exit. What should you do?

    • AContinue to the next exit (correct answer)
    • BStop on the shoulder and reverse back to the exit
    • CCut across the chevrons to reach the slip road
    • DMake a U-turn at the next gap in the divider

Why: Never reverse or make sudden moves on an expressway. Unnecessary reversing there is itself a demerit-point offence, so just carry on to the next exit.

  12. 12. What is the correct way to join an expressway?

    • AStop at the end of the slip road and wait for a large gap
    • BDrive slowly along the slip road and force your way in
    • CSignal on the slip road and build up to the speed of expressway traffic so you can merge smoothly (correct answer)
    • DMerge straight into the right-hand lane

Why: Signal once you are on the slip road and use it to match the speed of traffic already on the expressway. Merging at a similar speed is far safer than squeezing in slowly.
