Understanding COE Trends: How to Read Price Movements

COE Trends Analysis Guide Singapore

One COE result is a snapshot; the trend is the story. Learning to read trends helps you tell whether a price move is a genuine shift or just noise. Here’s a practical framework.

Zoom Out Before You React

A price can jump or drop in a single exercise for short-lived reasons — a quota quirk, a burst of demand, a holiday lull. Before reading anything into it, zoom out to 3, 6, and 12 months. The per-category history pages and year-by-year summaries make this easy.

What to Look For

1. Direction

Is the category broadly rising, falling, or flat over your window? Three consecutive moves in the same direction is more meaningful than one big jump.

2. Volatility

Are prices steady or swinging widely? A volatile category is harder to time; a stable one gives you more confidence in a reserve price.

3. Position in the range

Is the current price near the low, the middle, or the high of its recent range? A price near a multi-year high carries different risk than one near a low.

4. Category relationships

Watch how Cat A, Cat B, and Cat E move relative to each other. A widening or narrowing spread often signals where demand is shifting.

Separating Signal From Noise

Looks like a signalOften just noise
A sustained move over several exercisesOne exercise spiking, then reverting
A clear change in the 6-month averageSmall wobbles within the usual range
Spread between categories shifting persistentlyA single round where Cat E overshoots

No one can reliably predict the next COE price — it’s an auction driven by supply cycles and shifting demand. What you can do is understand the current trend and your own budget, then act with discipline. That’s far more useful than chasing forecasts.

Make It Glanceable

Our free app does the heavy lifting: multi-month trend charts per category, a statistics view (average, range, volatility), and price alerts so you’re notified when a real move happens — not every wobble.
